..::A Googly MySQL Cluster Talk::..
Otra interesante ponencia de google. Espero sus opiniones

Google TechTalks April 28, 2006
Stewart Smith Stewart Smith works for MySQL AB as a software engineer working on MySQL Cluster. He is ... todos » an active member of the free and open source software community, especially in Australia.
ABSTRACT Part 1 - Introduction to MySQL Cluster The NDB storage engine (MySQL Cluster) is a high-availability storage engine for MySQL. It provides synchronous replication between storage nodes and many mysql servers having a consistent view of the database. In 4.1 and 5.0 it's a main memory database, but in 5.1 non-indexed attributes can be stored on disk. NDB also provides a lot of determinism in system resource usage. I'll talk a bit about that.
Part 2 - New features in 5.1 including cluster to cluster replication, disk based data and a bunch of other things. anybody that is attending the mysql users conference may find this eerily familiar.

Computers versus Common Sense

Douglas Lenat Dr. Douglas Lenat is the President and CEO of Cycorp. Since 1984, he and his team have ... todos » been constructing, experimenting with, and applying a broad real world knowledge base and reasoning engine, collectively "Cyc".
Dr. Lenat was a professor of computer science at Carnegie-Mellon University and at Stanford University. His interest and experience in national security has led him to regularly consult for several U.S. agencies and the White House.
ABSTRACT It's way past 2001 now, where the heck is HAL? For several decades now we've had high hopes for computers amplifying our mental abilities not just giving us access to relevant stored information, but answering our complex, contextual questions.
Even applications like human-level unrestricted speech understanding continue to dangle close but just out of reach. What's been holding AI up? The short answer is that while computers make fine idiot savants, they lack common sense: the millions of pieces of general knowledge we all share, and fall back on as needed, to cope with the rough edges of the real world. I will talk about how that situation is changing, finally, and what the timetable -- and the path -- realistically are on achieving Artificial Intelligence

There are People in our Computers!
Exposicion de: There are People in our Computers!
David Wolber (http://cs.usfca.edu/~wolber) is a professor at the University of San Francisco. His ... todos » interests include collaborative research systems, e-politics, and service learning within computer science.
ABSTRACT Peoplicious is a collaborative research tool. Unlike systems such as del.icio.us, people are first-class data objects, along with documents. Users can create people, provide structured information about people (image, homepage, blog feed, delicious name, etc.), and create lists of people (people-tagging). Users can also bookmark documents and associate documents with people (personmarks). Any user can enter information about any person.
Peoplicious is where del.icio.us meets RSS reader all within a modern day address book. There is a working prototype that can be accessed at: http://peoplicious.com/Technorati/lists. It is designed so that new sites can easily be created for particular domains (e.g., see http://peoplicious.com/USF/lists). The system currently has one power user.

..::How To Break Web Software - A look at security vulnerabilities in web software::..
Mike Andrews
Mike Andrews is a senior consultant who specializes in software security and leads the ... todos » web application security assessments and Ultimate Web Hacking classes for Foundstone.
ABSTRACT It all started out as a place to share physics documents, but has grown into potentially mankind's largest and most complex creation. The World Wide Web is a lot of things - a soapbox for everyone, a giant shopping mall, an application platform, and unfortunately a hacker's playground.
As more applications get "web-ified" moving from the desktop or legacy systems onto the web, attackers follow the vulnerabilities. Without sophisticated tools or "1337 5x1llz", web applications are now the most attacked technology, with the majority of attacks categorized as "easily exploitable".
So, before your application is placed out into one of the most hostile environments, how do you stop your software from being "0wn3d" by the 14 year old in their blacked-out bedroom, or being used by a Russian crime cartel?
In this TechTalk, Mike Andrews will look at how web applications are attacked, walk through a testing framework for evaluating the security of an application and take some deep-dives into a few interesting and common vulnerabilities and how they can be exploited.

..::Human Computation::..
Carnegie Mellon University, ... todos » where he also received his Ph.D. in 2005. Previously, Luis obtained a B.S. in mathematics from Duke University in 2000. He is the recipient of a Microsoft Research Fellowship.
ABSTRACT Tasks like image recognition are trivial for humans, but continue to challenge even the most sophisticated computer programs. This talk introduces a paradigm for utilizing human processing power to solve problems that computers cannot yet solve. Traditional approaches to solving such problems focus on improving software. I advocate a novel approach: constructively channel human brainpower using computer games. For example, the ESP Game, described in this talk, is an enjoyable online game -- many people play over 40 hours a week -- and when people play, they help label images on the Web with descriptive keywords. These keywords can be used to significantly improve the accuracy of image search. People play the game not because they want to help, but because they enjoy it.
I describe other examples of "games with a purpose": Peekaboom, which helps determine the location of objects in images, and Verbosity, which collects common-sense knowledge. I also explain a general approach for constructing games with a purpose

Multi Touch
